Founded by Dr. R.F. Jackson, Jackson Veterinary Hospital is a full-service veterinary medical facility, proudly serving St. Augustine and surrounding Florida communities since 1959.

Our Mission

Our Founder

Dr. R.F. Jackson (1918-2010) was born in London, England, and came to the United States at 11 years of age. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1940 and eventually came to St. Augustine, Florida in 1944 to practice veterinary medicine.

Dr. Jackson opened Jackson Veterinary Hospital, at the present location, in 1959. Known internationally for his research and expertise in canine heartworm disease, some of his accomplishments include the two day divided dose schedule for adult heartworm treatment, the identification of the Caval Syndrome associated with heartworm disease, and the first surgical procedure to remove heartworms to save dogs' lives with the Caval Syndrome.

Dr. Jackson had many achievements in the veterinary field, including Florida Veterinarian of the Year, AVMA Practitioner Research Award, Michigan State University Alumni Award, and Ralston Purina Small Animal Research Award. He was a past president of the Florida Veterinary Medical Association (FVMA), an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) executive board member and its chairman in 1975, and a founder of the American Heartworm Society and its first president (1974-1977). He was also Mayor of St. Augustine in 1950.
